Our completed transcripts are uploaded using our bespoke file-upload platform, Global Lounge. Medical transcriptionists are still very much in demand. The work requires intense concentration from individuals with formal medical transcription training, including anatomy and physiology, medical terms and more. There is a theory that speech-recognition technology will replace actual medical transcriptionists, but that technology is often nicknamed “speech wreck” for a reason. It simply isn’t up to the standard and so cannot do the job of a medical typist.
For a medical transcriptionist, it takes about 4 – 6 hours to transcribe one hour’s worth of audio. This is because extra attention is needed to research the medical terms and get the spellings right. This is longer than the four hours that is the industry standard for transcribing other topics because medicine is often very complex.
A medical transcriber listens to a dictation and types what they hear into a report template. A medical coder assigns certain codes to patient charts in order to help patients submit reimbursement claims from their insurance companies. Medical coders are more common in private healthcare institutions. The two professions are very different, but sometimes confused.
Medical transcriptionists need to demonstrate intense periods of concentration over long periods of time to get the work done. They also need extensive training, and to be familiar with medical terms and bodily physiology and anatomy. Oftentimes, you will hear words that you may not know how to spell, uttered in foreign accents and with plenty of background noise to make everything more complicated. Not everyone can do it. If all this sounds daunting, let a qualified medical transcriptionist do the hard work for you.
