Working at McGowan Transcriptions

When you join our freelance transcription team you will be working with a dedicated, loyal, amazing, group of people who share the work equally – good quality and horrendous quality! (You will be well rewarded for all recordings, and receive rate uplifts for anything other than good quality recordings!)

We work to your schedule – you don’t work to ours. We just require you to transcribe 60 minutes of audio transcription projects, working remotely, a day, minimum three days a week. We would also like to hear from you if you are able to work weekends or Friday to Monday instead of a standard week. If you get ahead of yourself, you are able to use our auto-claim facility whereby you can top your workload up at any time of day. Having said this, once you have taken a project for a specific deadline, these deadlines have to be adhered to, absolutely no deadlines may be missed.

The subjects we cover are varied and opt-in – we work on some sensitive projects for social research and only opted-in individuals are given these files to transcribe.

Our transcriber turnaround delivery times are 7am, and are all next day delivery turnarounds. For each recording there is a specific deadline to adhere to, so you know exactly what you have to deliver by what time – which gives you flexibility on when you choose to transcribe.

We have rigid security protocols to follow so you will need up-to-date anti-virus software, a dedicated password protected computer, fast broadband, adhere to all of our information and data protection policies, have a clear DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate, and have your ID confirmed.

We pay on the 1st of the month, or the first Monday if the 1st falls over the weekend.

How to apply?

Once you have applied via the link below, and completed the short 5 minute group transcription test, you will receive an email within 48 hours letting you know if you have passed Phase 1 of our application process. If you are successful you will be working alongside Quality Control to get you used to our templates and get you out of any bad habits you may have gotten into with other agencies. In Phase 2 of the process you will work on a number of live files, which you will be paid for, where we will be able to assess whether we are a good fit for each other and whereby Quality Control will be guiding you on a daily basis.

We are not like other transcription agencies. We do not allow sub-standard transcripts or deadlines to be missed. In return, you will be working with a loyal and dedicated team, you will not be just a number. We invest in our transcribers in terms of on-going training and everyone has a chance to further their career by training as accredited proof-readers, taking typing speed courses and of course financially. You will not have to wonder if you will have work on any given day – you will work the days we have agreed. Of course there will always be occasions when researchers get stuck on trains or have no Wi-Fi in their hotels and devices fail, but we do not take on ad-hoc transcribers for ad-hoc projects and we do not over-recruit.

If you think the above is of interest but reads too good to be true (we get this statement ALL the time), please see the testimonies below from our existing team:

Nikki Mulcahey

Senior Transcriber, joined 2010

I joined McGowan Transcriptions in 2010 and haven’t looked back. I love what I do and who I work for because no two days are the same. I know that sounds like a cliché but it really is true. I have had such interesting, stimulating, empowering, informative and even humbling projects to transcribe that I always look forward to downloading my next file. Joe, Carol and QC are a pleasure to work for and with, and above all, their understanding, support and sense of humour have always got me through the toughest of days!! I urge you to take a test trial with McGowan Transcriptions. You won’t be disappointed!

Li Collins

Senior Medical Transcriber, joined 2006

Ever since joining the McGowan Transcriptions team, I have been continually amazed at how supportive, helpful and approachable everyone has been. From the very top – with Joe, Carol and our QC ensuring that the work we produce is of the highest standard – to my fellow skilled and friendly co-workers, I have always found them a valuable resource, always on hand if needed.

At McGowan Transcriptions you always feel appreciated for your contribution, which encourages you even more to go the extra mile to help out the team during busy times.

The flexibility that this way of working offers allows you to accommodate family commitments, health conditions and those unforeseen life events much more easily. So if you are a self-motivated person looking for varied and interesting work, and are disciplined enough to avoid the temptation of the fridge and daytime TV, I would recommend you join McGowan Transcriptions. You will feel valued as an individual and just as proud to be a part of this unique organisation as I do.

Jane Wheatley

Senior Transcriber, joined 2015

At the time of applying to McGowan, I was steadily working for another transcription company but often felt frustrated by the dips in workload and impersonal interaction. Having stumbled upon their job ad and completing a trial transcript, I was therefore thrilled to be offered the opportunity to join the team. One year on, I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Admittedly, I was skeptical and worried about leaving a steady job, but took a leap of faith and have never looked back. As promised, the workflow is constant and interesting, and Joe and her team have been continually considerate and supportive. Being home-based can sometimes be isolating, but working for McGowan you are most definitely made to feel part of a valued team. Put your trust in them and go for it. They are 100 per cent genuine in what they offer and a lovely team to work for

Cassie Green

Senior Transcriber, joined 2017

Working for McGowan Transcriptions can sometimes feel like a dream come true for me. When I was first offered the opportunity to become a part of the team almost a year ago, I was delighted and didn’t expect to receive the warm welcome, continued support and training the management team and my co-workers provide.

Despite working from home, we are continually kept up-to-date with any relevant news to our industry and trained to an exceptional standard that has allowed me to develop my knowledge and skills as a transcriber and my confidence. I don’t just feel like someone who works from home typing, I feel like a professional.

At McGowan, you won’t just feel like a respected, valued member of the team, you’ll be one. You’ll also wonder how you never found out about them before!

If you’re thinking about applying for McGowan, I couldn’t recommend them strongly enough. Working flexibly for McGowan Transcriptions has allowed me to take control of my life and my future. Once you’re here, you’ll never look back!

Senior Transcriber, joined 1997

The fact that I have worked with Joe for nearly 30 years now says it all! This job is so flexible and it suited me perfectly when I had a young family and still does now all these years later.

Joe has a massive amount of experience in the industry and is always looking ahead at new ways of working and keeping up with this ever-changing world of technology, which in turns enables us all to keep up-to-date and maintain our knowledge and skills.

We all work to very high standards and it’s so nice to see messages from clients about how much they appreciate the attention to detail, the quick turnaround times, if required, and our efforts when a recording is not the best quality.

If you’re thinking about working with McGowan Transcriptions, I would say that it is absolutely perfect for someone with a family or if you would like to have the freedom to work when you want. Joe and the team will support and encourage you through the early days of training, there are guidelines to refer to and, of course, all the other transcribers are online to answer any queries, which really does make you feel like you’re part of a team.

Don’t hesitate to join us – maybe you’ll be here for the next 30 years too!
