Tips for Transcribers – Whatever your level of expertise
As we look towards recruiting more amazing transcribers, here are some top tips from our existing transcription team:
- Practice regularly: Transcription is a skill that requires practice to improve. The more you practice, the better you’ll get at transcribing accurately and efficiently.
- Develop good typing skills: Typing quickly and accurately is essential for efficient transcription. Practice typing regularly and consider using typing software to improve your speed and accuracy.
- Use good equipment: Good-quality headphones, a comfortable keyboard, and a reliable computer can all make a significant difference in your transcription speed and accuracy.
- Familiarise yourself with the subject matter: If you’re transcribing content in a specific field, such as medical or legal, take the time to familiarise yourself with the subject matter. This will help you understand the terminology and context, making it easier to transcribe accurately.
- Be a good listener: Transcription requires excellent listening skills. Practice active listening by paying close attention to the speaker’s tone, inflection, and pace.
- Use appropriate software and tools: Consider using transcription software or tools to help you transcribe more efficiently. Some tools can automatically transcribe content or provide features such as speech-to-text technology, but you must be an exceptional proofreader to use this software as it can’t compare to human experience.
- Proofread your work: Once you’ve transcribed your content, always proofread your work carefully. Look for any errors, inconsistencies, or omissions and make corrections as needed. Take a break after your first version so you can come back and relisten to any unclear words with ‘fresh’ ears.
By following these tips, you can improve your transcription skills. Remember to practice regularly, use good equipment, familiarise yourself with the subject matter, be a good listener, use appropriate software and tools, and proofread your work carefully.
