The Transcription Dream Team

The clients were all so enthusiastic about the quality of the transcripts…

Next month I will be celebrating my second year at McGowan Transcriptions. The reason I’m celebrating is because I absolutely love my job. It’s stress-free, I get to type all day (which is my passion), and I work for a fantastic company with an amazing team of transcribers. They’re always ready and willing to share their expertise, offer moral support when you’ve had a tough file, and make you laugh out loud till the tears roll down your cheeks!

I’ve always loved typing. Even as a tot in Reception class I would lay the abacus flat on the table and pretend to type, and when I was five I got my first ‘real’ portable typewriter. I used to pretend I was one of those glamorous ladies on the old Saturday TV show World of Sport (the ones who typed the football scores whilst sitting primly at their typewriters behind the show’s host, Dickie Davies).

After leaving school I learned how to type properly at college and then moved into several secretarial roles. I thought my typing days were over after I married and became a full-time mum to five children, until one day when we decided to home-educate them all. (I know!) The great thing about that was having to research and prepare all their worksheets (the kids were between 2 and 9 years old when I started), where I learned how to use Google on the computer and this new-fangled thing they called a word processor. No more Tippex or pages ripped out of the typewriter! Little did I know that this was all preparing me wonderfully for my career now that the children have all grown up.

Prior to working with McGowan Transcriptions, I’d worked with another agency for a year. I enjoyed the typing itself, and I work with the attitude that every transcript matters a lot, but something still seemed missing. I felt disillusioned and really isolated because there was no contact allowed with the other transcribers, and I received no positive feedback or any indication that my work was of real value to the end client.

Feeling frustrated, I Googled other transcription companies and stumbled across McGowan Transcriptions. From the clients’ glowing testimonials and those of the transcribers too, everyone seemed to be genuinely happy. I was really impressed, and I thought I might apply, but because the clients were all so enthusiastic about the quality of the transcripts, I was a little fearful. This was because, as I said before, I’d had no positive feedback that my work was of a high enough standard. So I spent the next few weeks checking that my knowledge of grammar and punctuation was all correct, working on improving my words per minute, and listening to some tricky non-UK accents.

I then took the leap…

Finally I put in my application and I was contacted by our lovely Julia in Quality Control. She guided me through the application process and tested my skills. I was soon invited to join the fantastic team, who I found (to my delight and relief) to be equally as passionate about typing as I am and are 100 per cent committed to delivering first-class transcripts. The wonderful thing is that we can all be in contact daily, helping each other out with unfamiliar terms and encouraging one another when we have difficult days. This is my idea of a dream team!

  • Joe McGowan is the most amazing hands-on leader and CEO of McGowan Transcriptions and totally sets the standard by letting us know from day one that we are highly valued, and we are all treated as professionals. She is very present and involved, and is really encouraging and supportive, genuinely caring about each of the transcribers and our mental health and well-being, whether in relation to work or on a personal level. To quote a popular song, she is Simply the Best!
  • Linda schedules our work for us according to both our abilities and availabilities and always takes into consideration our current workloads. We never have to worry if we’re struggling with something, because she always gets back to us in super-speedy time with any queries we have, which takes a massive load off our minds. She’s a great addition to our Ops team and we love her!
  • Li, our wonderful mentor, has taught me how to do medical transcription, which is what I’ve always wanted to do since starting. She cheers us on and praises us whenever we have a particularly challenging project to tackle.  It’s so encouraging to hear great feedback from our clients too, and this is always passed on to us.

Sounds good, right?

To me, it goes without saying that if your workers are happy, they’ll produce great work, and that’s exactly what happens here. We approach every file with a positive can-do attitude because we know we’re highly valued. We genuinely care because we’re genuinely cared for. If we’re caught out by a tricky accent or unfamiliar terms, we’re not left to try and fathom it out for ourselves and hope for the best. We know there’s always someone on hand to ask to make doubly sure we’ve got it right, because at the end of the day, our clients keep coming back to us, so we owe them the same loyalty by producing exceptional transcripts, and nothing less will do. If your current transcription agency can’t say the same, then McGowan Transcriptions is the right place for you.
