Why is Strict Verbatim Transcription so Important?
Often called ‘true verbatim’, ‘full verbatim’ or ‘strict verbatim’, a verbatim transcript is one that transfers the spoken word, exactly how it is heard into text; word-for-word and letter-for-letter. A verbatim transcript includes every word, utterance and sound that is recorded; including pauses, laughter, coughs and any filler words such as “um”, “uh”, “like” and “you know”.
In contrast, intelligent verbatim or ‘non verbatim’ focuses on capturing the meaning of what is being said rather than how it is said. Intelligent verbatim transcripts will omit or adjust non-verbal sounds such as throat clearing and stuttering, as well as filler words, repeated words and any other irrelevant material.
Here at McGowan Transcriptions, our team of highly-skilled transcriptionists have been providing true verbatim, as well as non verbatim transcripts for over 25 years; we understand the importance of delivering the appropriate transcript, and how insufficiently transcribed files can have a negative impact on your objectives.

Transcriptionist’s Tips: Top Tips for Recording Better Audio Files
We’ve received our fair share of poor quality audio files over the years, and although we always do our best to ensure our work is completed to the highest standard, poor audio is a huge barrier to creating the superior quality audio transcriptions we produce here at McGowan Transcriptions.
A good quality audio file should be clear, with limited background noise and consistent volume throughout. To help you, (and us!), we’ve put together a list of our 5 top tips for recording better audio files.

Looking back on 2017
Where has 2017 gone?! It was McGowan Transcriptions’ 24th year, and what a memorable year it has been. To sum up: there have been challenges, there have been opportunities; we’ve welcomed new additions to the team as we’ve waved goodbye to others; we’ve even had some familiar faces coming back to us, too (hi Carol!); we’ve had no shortage of complex projects and demanding deadlines to meet, and I’m pleased to say that we have consistently delighted our old and new clients alike with our super-fast turnaround and quality delivery.

Not to blow our own trumpets, but we at McGowan Transcriptions are known for being super-speedy transcribers (well, so our clients keep telling us, anyway!). I mean, you’d hope we would be after 24 years in this business, wouldn’t you?!
What you might not know about us – because we don’t tend to shout about it as much – is that we’re also really passionate about innovation and technology. In recent times, it’s become increasingly apparent that we needed a powerful, custom-built file upload facility that could keep pace with our lightning-fast fingers.

Smoke & Mirrors – Lesson Learned
We work hard at McGowan Transcriptions to ensure that our work is of a very high standard and we also liaise closely with our clients in order to meet their deadlines and exceed expectations. Recently, we had a short, sharp lesson in the way another transcription agency is working and the fallout from it went on for days.
Very rarely, when we have been fully booked with work, we have asked a client if they would be happy for us to work alongside another agency. We have always taken care to choose agencies whose work is of a high standard and had already carried out a test to check the agency in question. Unusually, on this occasion, our client wished to have the transcripts back by midnight – a less than 12 hour deadline as the files landed after lunch.

Why you would want to work with McGowan Transcriptions
The fact that I have worked for Joe for many, many years, I believe speaks volumes. In fact, I’ve only just realised that this will actually be my 20th year!! Time flies as they say. I cannot deny that I did struggle at the beginning having never done this type of work previously but because Joe was always so encouraging and supportive, I managed to get through the challenges.

Virtually working, so to speak
As a transcription company, we are used to working digitally although it wasn’t always the case. We’ve been in business long enough to remember the days of mini cassette tapes and waiting for the postman to deliver our day’s work. However, we’ve always worked virtually and, in the ever-changing world of business, employing someone to work for you virtually is becoming more commonplace. Nevertheless, it is surprising how many business owners shy away from hiring a virtual assistant. It’s as though not being able to see a business assistant means that they don’t have any control. The truth is that a large proportion of professional relationships in any niche these days can be considered virtual.
