Recording Guidelines eBook

We encounter a variety of recordings in the course of our day – some are audio files, some are videos, some are recorded indoors, some outside or in large public spaces. We have interviews that are recorded as one-to-one, face-to-face conversations and also tele depths where researchers converse with respondents located in remote parts of the world. We receive recordings of large meetings where everyone talks at once and presentations and webinars with Q&A sessions. The subject matter or our transcriptions is wide-ranging, from market research to private memoirs and we also delve into the worlds of medicine and law.

Not to blow our own trumpets, but we at McGowan Transcriptions are known for being super-speedy transcribers (well, so our clients keep telling us, anyway!). I mean, you’d hope we would be after 24 years in this business, wouldn’t you?!

What you might not know about us – because we don’t tend to shout about it as much – is that we’re also really passionate about innovation and technology. In recent times, it’s become increasingly apparent that we needed a powerful, custom-built file upload facility that could keep pace with our lightning-fast fingers.

Smoke & Mirrors – Lesson Learned

We work hard at McGowan Transcriptions to ensure that our work is of a very high standard and we also liaise closely with our clients in order to meet their deadlines and exceed expectations. Recently, we had a short, sharp lesson in the way another transcription agency is working and the fallout from it went on for days.

Very rarely, when we have been fully booked with work, we have asked a client if they would be happy for us to work alongside another agency. We have always taken care to choose agencies whose work is of a high standard and had already carried out a test to check the agency in question. Unusually, on this occasion, our client wished to have the transcripts back by midnight – a less than 12 hour deadline as the files landed after lunch.

Virtually working, so to speak

As a transcription company, we are used to working digitally although it wasn’t always the case. We’ve been in business long enough to remember the days of mini cassette tapes and waiting for the postman to deliver our day’s work. However, we’ve always worked virtually and, in the ever-changing world of business, employing someone to work for you virtually is becoming more commonplace. Nevertheless, it is surprising how many business owners shy away from hiring a virtual assistant. It’s as though not being able to see a business assistant means that they don’t have any control. The truth is that a large proportion of professional relationships in any niche these days can be considered virtual.

Transcription – why we are unique

Today is a bit special because it’s one month since I started working for McGowan Transcriptions and it’s been a wonderful few weeks. For me this has not only been a pleasant new ‘place of work’ but a total revelation when it comes to working as a transcriptionist. When I submitted my application, I did so because the words ‘professional’ and ‘team’ were in Joe’s advert for audio transcribers. I thought that’s odd, because after six years working as a transcriptionist, or ‘typist’ as one agency liked to define us – call me arrogant and pompous if you like, but I happen to think the audio transcription of often hard-won qualitative research is a wee bit different to just ‘typing’ – I’d not ever particularly associated those words with the digital transcription services’ industry as a whole.
