Advantages Of Professional Digital Transcription
Professional digital transcription accurately converts voice-recorded sound into text, providing a written record of what is on the audio recording. It is done by trained transcriptionists who will listen to the recording while typing what is being said into a document. The process does not merely involve typing the utterances heard in the audio file; it is systematic, and can be both phonetic and orthographic depending on the client’s requirements. To ensure accuracy, professional digital transcriptions go through editing and review.

How The Transcription Process Works
Data, speech, or spoken content transcription is a straightforward process. Recorded dictation or information that requires transcription can be sent to a transcriber who will then convert your audio file into a typed, editable document, according to your requirements. Different types of transcription software may also be used to aid in more accurate transcription of the dictation, along with standard templates or user-generated templates to meet your specific requirements.

Digital Transcription Versus Traditional Transcription
Digital transcription services that use audio to text programs and software are becoming increasingly popular, although there is still much debate about their efficiency compared to traditional transcription. Audio to text software programs allow automatic transcription of voice recordings to text format; however, they are still limited in terms of features and capabilities. The poor transcription results they generate often have to be transcribed again using traditional methods to ensure accuracy.

Tractors!
One of the projects McGowan Transcription services were recently involved in was transcribing interviews on agriculture machinery. Anyone deluded enough to think that such a project would be plain sailing, think again. Of course we have all heard of Massey Ferguson and John Deere; how difficult could it be?
It soon became apparent that the transcription team had been thrown deep into, er, unploughed territory. Not only are there innumerable makes and models on the market but many interviews were conducted in the depths of the countryside.

Digital Transcription – Digital Dictation -V- Cassettes
After telling my nine year old, while nagging her to prepare for her piano lesson, that practice makes perfect she asked me how long I’d been practising to type to become so fast at it and to be able to type without looking at the keyboard. My initial answer was ‘oh about 10 years or so’ but after working it out it’s more like 19 years – I must be older than I thought!
This got me thinking about how audio transcription has changed during the last 20 years.
When I first started training as a legal secretary we used reel-to-reel dictation and typewriters – remember those? We eventually moved on to basic PCs and standard size cassettes. A few years later when mini cassettes were introduced for dictation we thought they were very high tech. How could it get any better?

Transcription – Do We Require Cheaper Or Better?
Here’s a problem facing everyone in the world of business today, from transcribers to corporate bosses – Do you want things to be done cheaper or better?
Words are one of the first ‘victims’ when speed is of the essence. Emails and text messages are littered with abbreviations, slang, condensed phrases like LOL and u r gr8! If you read one of my teenage daughter’s text messages you’d probably understand 60% of what was being said. You have to guess the rest. Guessing is okay in this instance, it’s likely that whatever the text reads the meaning is either can I have some more money or can I have a lift! The tone is not important either; not so in research situations.

Transcription – An Unexpected Bonus!
One of the unexpected bonuses of doing audio transcription is that we are amongst the first to hear about proposed new products, services and not to mention new technology. Over the years, I have become something of a Luddite with regards to new technology, not that I was ever particularly good at mastering things like video recorders et cetera. But I have clung with dogged determination to my pay-as-you-go bottom of the range Nokia reassuring everyone, especially my children, that it was perfect for my needs.
