30 Year Celebrations – Testimonials From Our Transcribers
Zara:
This job will be perfect until the children start school…
That’s what I said 16 years ago – my youngest left school last month. Working for McGowan Transcriptions has allowed me to be there for school drop-offs and pick-ups, I’ve been fortunate to be able to help out in school and be at home during the school holidays. I feel blessed to have had the flexibility to be a stay-at-home mum and have an income at the same time.
This is a testament to the amazing team at McGowan Transcriptions; Joe, the operations team and the transcribers. They are always there to help through the tough times and to celebrate the good times.
As I wrote this, I began to wonder how many transcripts I’ve typed over the years. The topics are so wide-ranging, every day is different, you never know what you’re going to get next. I’ve learnt so much from many of the transcripts I’ve typed, not only useful facts (we’d make a great quiz team!) but also the way people feel about things and different ways of life. I’ve had transcripts that have made me laugh out loud and transcripts that have moved me to tears. You will occasionally get a transcript that can really change the way you see things. I definitely have a favourite which I will never forget, but for client confidentiality reasons, I’ll have to keep that to myself!
So now that my children have left school and I don’t need the flexibility of school hours and school holidays, is it time to head back to the office? Absolutely not! I could not imagine working anywhere else, with such a great team, flexible hours and working from home. Plus, I wouldn’t want to upset the dog!
Alex:
I’ve been transcribing for McGowan Transcriptions coming up to five years in October. It’s an absolutely amazing company to transcribe for. You’re really made to feel like a valued team member. Working from home you can feel slightly isolated, but since I’ve been with McGowan’s, I’ve never felt alone. The Operations team are totally supportive and helpful in every possible way. The past year in particular I’ve experienced some family health issues, and the support I’ve received has been phenomenal. Joe is so caring and compassionate and has always let me know she’s there if ever I need her, both professionally and personally. Linda, too, is so supportive and has often rearranged my schedule whenever anything unexpected has cropped up. Tracey, who’s recently joined Operations, is quick to answer any queries I might have with files straightaway. Nothing is ever too much trouble for anyone. Cheryl in QC is so good. She takes the time to give feedback on every file. The wider McGowan team are amazing, too. All the great things that are modelled by Joe filter down, and the same support and compassion is mirrored by the rest of the transcribing team. It feels like a family. No wonder McGowan Transcriptions is still going strong after 30 years! It is a truly fantastic company to be part of.
P.s. Alex hasn’t mentioned our other fabulous QC person Paul – he’s her hubby so … awkward!
Nikki:
Wow! Unbelievable how time flies. I can only say that being able to work for McGowan is a privilege and has facilitated my ability to be able to live the way I want to live without having to compromise on anything. It allowed me to be able to get a rescue dog or two which I wouldn’t have been able to do if I had stayed at my previous jobs as I had to spend 4 hours a day on a train to and from London. Joe and the team have been so understanding with any of the health problems that have come up with my family and have allowed me the most important thing in a job – flexibility! I am so glad that I made it through the first transcription test and was approved to work for McGowan all those years ago – 13 years ago I believe!!
Needless to say I love working for McGowan and am not planning on retiring anytime soon!!
Helen B:
Re-entering the job market in 2021 after 18 years of being a stay-at-home mum was particularly daunting. Deciding to dip my toe in the freelance pool with a few ad hoc clients seemed like the safest way to explore what was out there. I soon came to realise that transcription was something that I actually really enjoy. Coming across McGowan Transcriptions in a Google search for ‘work from home transcription job’ was definitely the best thing that could have happened. Being an anxiety sufferer the idea of physically working in an office was terrifying. With McGowan Transcriptions I get to work from home, whilst also being part of a wonderful team of fellow transcribers, supporting each other when needed, and even enjoying the banter in our ‘virtual’ staffroom. Between this and our annual in-person meetup, I really do get to enjoy the best of both worlds. I have loved my first two years as part of the team and I hope to continue to be a part of McGowan through the next 30 years of its journey!
